Cancer cases worldwide are projected to rise 67โฏ% by 2050, from 21โฏmillion in 2024 to 34โฏmillion, according to new estimates released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The figures also show that 9.8โฏmillion people died of the disease last year and that roughly one in five adults will develop cancer during their lifetime. The surge is driven largely by demographic changes: global populations are growing and living longer, pushing more people into age brackets where cancer risk is highest.
The numbers matter because they point to a looming health crisis that will strain health systems already stretched by other nonโcommunicable diseases. In 2024, cancer accounted for about 18โฏ% of all deaths worldwide, a figure that is set to rise as mortality rates decline and people survive longer with the disease. Lowโ and middleโincome countries, where health infrastructure is weaker, are expected to bear the greatest burden. Rising incidence also means higher costs for treatment, which can push families into poverty and widen health inequalities.
What has caused the projected jump is a mix of ageing, lifestyle changes and environmental exposures. As life expectancy climbs, more people reach the age where cancer is most common. At the same time, urbanization has led to diets high in processed foods, reduced physical activity, and increased pollution, all of which raise cancer risk. Tobacco use remains a major driver, especially in regions where smoking rates have not fallen sharply. In addition, gaps in vaccination programmes for human papillomavirus and hepatitis B, which prevent cervical and liver cancers, mean that preventable cases will continue to rise.
Health authorities are calling for a coordinated response. The World Health Organizationโs Global Action Plan on Cancer urges countries to invest in prevention, early detection and affordable treatment. Screening programmes for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers, along with publicโhealth campaigns on smoking and diet, are seen as priority actions. Governments are also urged to increase research funding, strengthen primaryโcare networks, and ensure equitable access to new therapies. If these measures are implemented, the projected rise could be moderated, but the window for action is narrow.
