CAIR has blasted Texas Governor Greg Abbott for blocking the installation of Islamic preโ€‘prayer washing stations, known as wudu, at Dallasโ€‘Fort Worth International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport, saying the move is an โ€œantiโ€‘Muslim political stunt.โ€ The civilโ€‘rights group posted its criticism on Monday after Abbott threatened to pull state funding from the airports and ordered federal investigations into the facilities, which already provide sinks and faucets for foot washing.

The governorโ€™s actions come amid a broader push by the Republican administration to scrutinize public spaces for alleged religious favoritism. Abbott has already signed a law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in Texas schools and has pushed for Bible stories to be mandatory reading in public classrooms. In the airport case, he accused the facilities of โ€œreligious discriminationโ€ and claimed that they โ€œsingle out one subset of the population for special treatment based on religion.โ€ The airports, both stateโ€‘owned, said they were evaluating the projects on operational benefits and costs, and accelerated the review because of the heightened public interest. They ultimately decided not to proceed, saying the stations would not deliver the anticipated benefits.

Rights advocates argue that providing washing stations does not violate the First Amendment, as the facilities are open to all travelers and are similar to interfaith prayer rooms and bidets found worldwide. CAIR pointed out that the wudu stations would be available to anyone, not just Muslims, and that the airportsโ€™ decision to remove them is an unnecessary politicization of a routine amenity. The group also noted that Abbottโ€™s recent moves, such as revoking state grant funds and referring the airports to federal agencies, appear to target a specific religious group rather than address any operational concerns.

The fallout could lead to federal investigations into whether the governorโ€™s actions constitute unlawful discrimination. If the federal agencies find evidence of bias, they could impose penalties or require the airports to reinstate the facilities. Meanwhile, CAIR has called on Abbott to focus on broader publicโ€‘interest issues instead of โ€œwasting taxpayer resources on this latest antiโ€‘Muslim political stunt.โ€ The situation underscores the growing tension over how public institutions accommodate diverse religious practices while maintaining neutrality.
