Brooks Koepka misses FedExCup Playoffs in first season back from LIV Golf: 'It's pretty pathetic'

Brooks Koepka missed the FedExCup Playoffs on Sunday, ending his first season back on the PGA Tour after defecting to LIV Golf in a high-profile defection in June 2022.

Koepka finished 144th in the FedExCup standings, well outside the top 125 who qualify for the postseason. He called the result “pretty pathetic” during a press conference at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, his final event before the cutoff. The two-time PGA Champion had banked on LIV’s eight events to keep him sharp, but inconsistent form and missed cuts piled up. He missed the cut in five of his nine starts and never broke par over a full tournament.

The miss underscores the uneven transition for top players switching tours. Koepka won the LIV Golf Signature Event in Miami in February, but his PGA Tour return since June 2023 has not translated to consistent results. His frustration reflects a wider tension: LIV’s guaranteed purses and no-cut formats contrast sharply with the PGA Tour’s pressure-packed, cut-throat playoffs. Rivals like Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler thrived under that pressure, while Koepka’s game has sputtered. His swing coach Hank Haney hinted at possible mechanical tweaks after Sunday’s round.

Now Koepka must decide his path. He can try again on the PGA Tour, accept a fixture on LIV, or chase a major outside the traditional tours. Either way, his absence from the playoffs marks a symbolic stumble for a player once ranked No. 1 and a central figure in the golf civil war. What happens next may shape whether other stars follow his cross-tour move—or steer clear of the fallout.
