Flávio Bolsonaro, the 45‑year‑old son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, led the first round of Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday with 47.03% of the vote, but fell short of the 50% needed to win outright. The result forces a runoff on 25 October between Flávio and incumbent left‑wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who received 45.16% as 99% of ballots were counted.

The tight finish reflects a country still divided after a tumultuous 2022 contest that saw Lula narrowly defeat Jair Bolsonaro. Jair, now serving a 27‑year prison term for planning a failed coup, was barred from running and threw his support behind his son. Lula, 80, warned voters that the runoff pits democracy against “barbarism,” while Flávio promised to “free the Brazilian people.” The election comes as much of Latin America has shifted toward right‑wing leaders, raising questions about Brazil’s future direction.

Flávio’s Liberal Party (PL) emerged as the largest bloc in Congress, winning the most governorships, Senate seats and federal deputy positions so far. The younger Bolsonaro enjoys strong backing in the affluent south, among evangelical Christians and wealthier voters, whereas Lula remains popular in the poorer northeast, with low‑income voters, Catholics and women. Flávio has pledged amnesty for his father and the rioters who stormed government buildings on 8 January 2023 if he wins. Jair Bolsonaro’s wife, Michelle, was elected to the Senate on the same day, adding another family member to the political arena.

The upcoming runoff will decide whether Brazil joins the wave of right‑leaning governments that dominate the region or stays under Lula’s left‑ist administration. A Flávio victory could reshape Brazil’s foreign policy, economic strategy and internal security approach, while a Lula win would reinforce his agenda of social programs and democratic institutions. Both candidates have signaled they will intensify campaigning in the three weeks ahead, as the nation watches a pivotal moment that could define its political landscape for years to come.
