BlackRock has tokenised $311โฏbillion of European moneyโmarket funds by partnering with JPโฏMorganโs Kinexys, launching the tokens on Ethereum for professional investors only. The move marks the largest cashโmanagement platform in Europe to issue digital securities, signalling a new chapter for institutional finance.
Tokenisation has been on the agenda for years, but only recently has the regulatory environment caught up. EU rules now allow certain digital asset products to be sold to qualified investors, and BlackRockโs partnership with a major bank gives it the credibility to move forward. By converting moneyโmarket holdings into blockchainโbased tokens, the firm can cut settlement times, reduce paperwork and give investors a more liquid, transparent asset that trades 24/7.
The tokens are issued on Ethereum through Kinexys, a platform that provides custody, compliance and marketโmaking services. Because the offering is limited to professional investors, it sidesteps the stricter rules that apply to retail buyers. The structure also meets MiFIDโฏII and the EUโs Markets in CryptoโAssets Regulation, ensuring that the tokenised funds can be traded across borders without violating securities law.
If the pilot succeeds, BlackRock may extend tokenisation to other asset classes, such as bonds or realโestate funds, and eventually open the platform to qualified retail investors. The move could also pressure other asset managers to follow suit, accelerating the shift from traditional cash management to blockchainโenabled liquidity. As more firms adopt similar models, the European moneyโmarket could become a more efficient, global marketplace for shortโterm capital.
