BlackRock said on Tuesday it is piloting tokenized versions of its iShares exchangeโ€‘traded funds, allowing a small group of institutional investors to buy and sell digital shares on a private blockchain. The move was announced at a conference in New York and marks the first time the worldโ€™s largest asset manager has publicly offered a glimpse of how tokenization could sit inside a mainstream portfolio.

Tokenization turns a traditional security into a digital token that can be transferred instantly on a blockchain. The idea has been explored by fintech firms and a handful of banks, but regulatory uncertainty and technical hurdles have kept it on the fringe. Rising demand for cryptoโ€‘linked products and the push for lower costs and faster settlement have revived interest. BlackRockโ€™s entry signals that the industry now feels confident enough to test the technology at scale.

The pilot uses a permissioned version of the Ethereum network and is backed by USDC stablecoins supplied by Circle. BlackRockโ€™s Aladdin risk platform will verify each transaction and enforce compliance rules, while investors can purchase fractions as small as oneโ€‘hundredth of a share. Early participants say the system cuts settlement time from days to minutes and reduces custody fees. Analysts at Bloomberg note that the tokenized funds could eventually lower the $100,000 minimum investment that many iShares products require, opening them to a broader base of investors.

BlackRock plans to expand the test to more funds and to explore publicโ€‘chain options later this year, pending regulator signโ€‘off. If the pilot proves successful, other asset managers may follow, accelerating the shift toward digital ownership of traditional assets. The move could reshape how everyday investors build portfolios, making them more flexible, liquid and accessible.
