Julian Alvarez has returned to training at Atletico Madrid on Monday, a move that signals he is ready to make a formal request for a move to Barcelona. The Argentine striker has been linked with the Catalan club for months, and his comeback after a short break has been seen as a step toward finalising a potential transfer. Atletico’s manager said Alvarez is focused on his performance, but the player’s future is now in the spotlight.

The transfer has become a priority for Barcelona, who are looking to strengthen their attack after a poor run of form. Alvarez’s pace, work rate and finishing have earned him a spot in Argentina’s squad for the Copa América, and he has been a regular for Atletico’s first team since joining in 2022. Atletico’s contract with the striker runs until 2028, meaning the club could demand a substantial fee. Barcelona’s sporting director has said the club is willing to match or exceed offers from other Spanish teams, and the transfer could be completed before the summer window closes.

Atletico’s manager has hinted that the club is open to a deal, but insists any move must be in the best interest of the team. Alvarez’s agent has been in talks with Barcelona’s board, and a preliminary offer reportedly exceeds €80 million. The Spanish league’s transfer regulations allow for a player to negotiate with a new club once the contract is within the last 12 months, but the club must still agree to a release clause. Alvarez is expected to meet with Barcelona’s sporting director next week to discuss the terms.

If the deal goes through, Alvarez would join a Barcelona side that is rebuilding after a period of instability. The transfer would also give Atletico a chance to reinvest the money into new signings. The outcome will be decided in the coming days, with the transfer window remaining open until 31 August. The move could reshape the balance of power in La Liga and set the stage for a new era of competition between the two clubs.
