The Australian market is trimming its early gains on Thursday, though it continues to build on the momentum from the past two sessions. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index rose 14.80 points, or 0.17 percent, reaching 8,550.10, after peaking at 8,575.20 earlier in the day. Gains in mining and financial sectors are supporting the index, even as energy and technology stocks show some weakness.

This shift comes in the wake of mixed signals from Wall Street overnight, prompting investors to reassess their positions. The Australian market had a strong performance on Wednesday, which set a positive tone for the week. However, the fluctuating trends in the global market, particularly in energy and tech, are causing some investors to exercise caution.

Among the standout performers, Mineral Resources surged nearly 7 percent, while Fortescue Metals, BHP Group, and Rio Tinto also saw gains. In contrast, oil stocks like Woodside Energy and Origin Energy experienced slight declines. The tech sector saw mixed results as well, with Afterpay owner Block down almost 1 percent, while Appen and WiseTech Global gained over 1 percent.

Looking ahead, the market's ability to sustain its upward momentum will depend on both domestic economic indicators and global market trends. The Australian dollar is currently trading at $0.628, reflecting ongoing fluctuations in currency exchange rates. Investors will be watching closely as companies release earnings and economic data in the coming weeks, which could further influence market direction.
