Australia pledges to restore ecosystems by 2030

Australia pledged to repair ecosystems and halt species loss by 2030 after decades of habitat destruction. Success could set a global example, but irreversible damage means failure is not an option.

Australia has pledged to restore nature. But could we ever bring back lost ecosystems?

Australiaโ€™s new government has promised to repair damaged ecosystems and halt species loss by 2030. The pledge comes after decades of warnings that the countryโ€™s unique wildlife and habitats are in steep decline.

Past governments have cut conservation budgets or prioritized development over protection. Logging, land clearing, and invasive species like feral cats and foxes have destroyed habitats and pushed many native animals toward extinction. Scientists say the situation is urgent because Australia has one of the highest rates of mammal extinctions in the world. Some ecosystems, like the ancient woodlands of Western Australia or the rainforests of Queensland, are now so degraded that full recovery may be impossible.

Restoring nature in Australia will not be easy. The government plans to spend billions on habitat repair, feral animal control, and better fire management after the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20. But experts warn that restoring ecosystems is slow and expensive. Even well-funded projects, like the reintroduction of the eastern quoll to mainland Australia, have struggled. Some species are already gone forever. Others depend on habitats that no longer exist in the same way.

If Australia succeeds, it could set a global example for how to revive struggling landscapes. But failure means more extinctions and irreversible damage to the countryโ€™s natural heritage. The next eight years will show whether the new promises turn into real change.
