The recent merger of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into government forces has ignited discussions among Kurds in Syria, Iraq, and Turkey about their future rights. This integration, finalized last month, follows a swift military takeover of northern Syria by government troops, effectively disbanding the SDF and the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration that has governed the region for over a decade.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has pledged constitutional protection for Kurdish language and political rights, a promise that has met with skepticism from analysts. Many fear that the abandonment of armed resistance could jeopardize the Kurdish struggle for recognition and identity. SDF leader Mazloum Abdi expressed hope that this transition marks a shift from conflict to peace, emphasizing the importance of building a democratic Syria through cooperation rather than armed struggle.

Reactions to this change are mixed among Kurdish politicians. Some view the integration as a chance to secure formal participation in shaping Syriaโ€™s future, while others perceive it as a concession to Turkish and U.S. pressure. Turkey has long opposed Kurdish autonomy, seeing groups like the Peopleโ€™s Protection Units (YPG), which formed the backbone of the SDF, as extensions of the PKK, labeled as a terrorist organization by Ankara. The U.S., originally supportive of the SDF in the fight against ISIS, has pivoted to align with the Syrian government, further complicating the Kurds' position.

Looking ahead, Kurdish leaders like Talal Mohammed of the Kurdistan Democratic Peace Party see an opportunity to unify and advocate for their rights within the framework of a new constitution. However, he cautioned that external pressures, particularly from Turkey, could undermine these efforts. The evolving political landscape in Syria poses significant implications for the Kurdish community, whose quest for recognition and rights remains fraught with challenges amid shifting alliances and regional dynamics.
