Arsenal have signed Newcastle United’s captain Bruno Guimaraes for £75 million, ending weeks of speculation over his future. The 28-year-old Brazil international joins on a four-year deal with an option for a further 12 months, ending his two-and-a-half-year spell at St James’ Park. Guimaraes becomes Arsenal’s third major signing of the summer, following Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, as Mikel Arteta’s side push to reclaim the Premier League title.

The move completes a long-running saga that began in June when Guimaraes first expressed his desire to join Arsenal. The Brazilian midfielder described the decision as one of the toughest of his life, citing his deep emotional ties to Newcastle, where he lifted the 2025 EFL Cup as captain. Yet he told journalists: “I wanted to experience something new. I feel ready for a new challenge—for myself and my family.” Newcastle confirmed they wished him and his family well, ending a transfer saga that saw him leave the club’s pre-season training camp in La Manga earlier this week to finalise terms.

Guimaraes revealed he received personal messages from Arsenal teammates-in-waiting, including compatriot Gabriel Jesus and Rice, who joked: “come here and please no more fights—now we’re friends.” Rice’s comment refers to their fiery Premier League duels when Guimaraes was at Newcastle. The Brazilian midfielder said: “I’m at the point in my life where I need a challenge like this. I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it. I’m so excited to start.”

Guimaraes arrived at Newcastle in January 2022 when they were fighting relegation and became a key figure under Eddie Howe, helping the club reach two Champions League campaigns and lift the EFL Cup in 2025. His departure marks a new chapter for both player and club. For Arsenal, it strengthens a midfield that already boasts Rice’s energy and control. For Newcastle, it’s a financial windfall and a chance to rebuild after a disappointing 12th-place finish last season. The deal underscores the Premier League’s increasingly fluid transfer market, where top clubs move quickly to secure talent while emotional bonds and loyalty take a back seat.
