Apple announced that its new Apple Watch will be able to transcribe recent speech and produce summaries of ambient conversations, but the company says it does not store raw audio. The update, unveiled at Appleโ€™s 2024 developer event, adds onโ€‘device AI to the watchโ€™s health and communication features. Apple stresses that all processing happens locally and the data is deleted once the summary is created. The watch will still record heart rate, GPS and other health metrics, but no unedited audio files are kept on Appleโ€™s servers.

The move comes amid growing concerns over privacy in the era of AI. Wearables already collect sensitive data, and regulators in the EU and the US are tightening rules on how that data can be used. Apple has faced criticism before over the handling of health data and location tracking, and this new feature adds a fresh layer of scrutiny. Experts say that even if raw audio is not saved, the ability to capture and summarize conversations could change how people speak around their devices. The technology could also be used by law enforcement or advertisers if the policies shift, raising questions about consent and surveillance.

Apple says the AI runs entirely on the watchโ€™s new silicon, which can process speech locally. The company claims that the summary is stored only for a short period and can be deleted by the user. Privacy advocates, however, warn that the line between โ€œtranscriptionโ€ and โ€œrecordingโ€ is blurred. A report from the Electronic Frontier Foundation noted that the watchโ€™s microphone remains active when the user is speaking, and that the device could still be listening in other contexts. Appleโ€™s spokesperson said the feature is optional and can be turned off in the settings, but users may not be aware of how the data is handled.

Regulators are likely to examine the new feature closely. The EUโ€™s AI Act and Californiaโ€™s privacy laws could require Apple to provide clearer optโ€‘in mechanisms and more transparency about data usage. Apple may need to update its privacy policy and add a dedicated setting for conversation summaries. The companyโ€™s approach could set a precedent for other tech firms. If the feature is widely adopted, it may normalize the idea that everyday devices are always listening, even if the raw audio never leaves the device. The next few months will show whether Apple can balance innovation with privacy demands.
