Apple is testing a new feature that could let iPhone users prove a photo really came from their deviceโ€™s camera.

Two strings in the latest iOS 27 betaโ€”โ€œCameraAuthenticityProofโ€ and โ€œAFInfoโ€โ€”suggest a cryptographic signature will be embedded in each shot. The signature would travel with the file, letting apps and websites verify the image was captured on an iPhone, not generated by AI or copied from elsewhere. Apple has a history of quietly adding anti-forgery tech; it already stamps raw files with unique identifiers and, in iOS 17, introduced โ€œproof modeโ€ for journalists.

The move arrives as deepfakes and AI-generated images flood social feeds, eroding trust in visual evidence. Appleโ€™s lock-in to its own hardware could give it an edge over third-party watermarking services like Adobeโ€™s Content Credentials. Privacy watchers will focus on whether these signatures stay on-device or can be stripped by usersโ€”a decision that could shape uptake among privacy-conscious photographers. Reuters reported last year that Apple was exploring cryptographic tools for iMessage media, hinting at a broader anti-misinformation push.

If the feature ships, it would work only for images taken on iPhones running iOS 27 or later. Appleโ€™s Photos app and Messages could surface a small badge or checkmark to indicate an image is โ€œcamera-authenticated.โ€ Rivals like Google and Samsung may follow, turning camera provenance into a standard part of mobile photography. For newsrooms, fact-checkers, and courts, this could become the default way to confirm a photoโ€™s originโ€”if users actually keep the signature intact.
