A total lunar eclipse will darken the moon into a deep red on September 1, 2026, turning the sky into a celestial display visible across Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia. The event is called a “plane lunar eclipse,” meaning the moon will pass almost directly through the center of Earth’s shadow, producing the darkest and longest totality in decades. Skywatchers will see the moon dim gradually before turning coppery for about 1 hour and 23 minutes—nearly twice as long as many recent eclipses.

Lunar eclipses happen when the sun, Earth, and moon align perfectly, with Earth blocking sunlight and casting a shadow on the moon. Total eclipses vary in depth depending on how closely the moon passes through the center of Earth’s umbra—the darkest part of the shadow. Because the moon’s orbit is slightly tilted, most full moons miss the shadow entirely. But every few years, the alignment is exact enough to produce a total eclipse. This one is special because the moon will travel almost exactly through the central axis, maximizing both darkness and duration.

Astronomers expect the moon to dim to a deep, rusty red during totality, caused by sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere and scattering blue light. Weather permitting, viewers in western Europe, western Africa, and parts of South America and the Middle East will see the entire event. NASA’s eclipse predictions show totality beginning at 17:11 UTC and ending at 18:34 UTC, with the partial phases visible earlier and later. The eclipse will be highest in the sky for observers in the Atlantic, making oceanic islands like the Azores ideal vantage points.

This eclipse is part of a rare series that includes the next total lunar eclipse visible from the Americas in March 2025 and another in August 2026. But September’s event stands out for its symmetry and duration, offering scientists a chance to study how Earth’s atmosphere affects light passing through it. For the public, it will be a dramatic reminder of our place in the solar system—a moment when the moon turns red not by its own light, but by the filtered glow of every sunrise and sunset on Earth.
