AI Music Company Suno Unveils Download Caps for Free, Paid Tiers in Quest to Combat Abuse (EXCLUSIVE)

Suno will begin limiting how many AI-generated songs users can download, starting Sept. 3, in an effort to reduce abuse of its free music generator. Free-tier users will be capped at seven downloads total, while paid subscribers will get 50 downloads per month. The Boston-based startup said the move aims to protect artists, labels, and partners from unauthorized use of its tool.

The crackdown comes as AI music tools like Suno face growing scrutiny over copyright violations and the flood of synthetic tracks online. Major music labels have sued other AI companies, accusing them of training models on copyrighted songs without permission. Suno, valued at $500 million, has argued its technology can coexist with artistsโ€”but only if usage is controlled. The company has been in talks with rights holders to license training data, a key step in legitimizing its business.

Free users will still be able to generate and listen to unlimited songs, while paid tiers ($10/month for basic, $30 for pro) unlock more downloads. Sunoโ€™s CEO told Variety the limits are a โ€œnecessary trade-offโ€ to prevent misuse while keeping the platform accessible. Early adopters have already uploaded millions of tracks, some of which allegedly mimic real artists, raising alarms in the industry.

Starting next month, users who hit their cap will have to upgrade or wait until the next billing cycleโ€”or delete older tracks to free up space. Sunoโ€™s move is a test case for whether AI music platforms can balance growth with responsibility. If successful, it could set a standard for how similar tools handle downloads and copyright. Failure could mean more lawsuits, stricter regulations, or a backlash from both creators and listeners.
