A pilot of an Amazon cargo plane warned his co-pilot multiple times that they were approaching Miami International Airport too fast before the aircraft crashed, killing five people on Sunday. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released details from cockpit voice recordings indicating that the pilot expressed concerns for nearly two minutes as they descended and touched down.

This incident has drawn attention as it marks a tragic event in aviation safety, highlighting potential human error and procedural failures during critical phases of flight. The plane landed awkwardly, barreling approximately 1,300 feet past the runway's end and colliding with a van occupied by workers at a plane cleaning company, resulting in the deaths of all five individuals inside the vehicle. Five others sustained injuries, with two remaining in critical condition as of Tuesday. The two pilots survived the crash and have since been interviewed by investigators.

Experts have pointed out that the crew had opportunities to rectify the situation as the plane approached landing. Mike O'Donnell, a former Federal Aviation Administration official, noted that the pilots could have employed several strategies to slow the aircraft down, including extending the spoilers or aborting the landing altogether. Instead, the cockpit recordings revealed the pilots briefly attempted to lift off again before abandoning that effort just seconds later, indicating a lack of coordination in their response to the alarming situation.

The flight data recorder provided further insights, showing the plane was unstable during its descent, particularly in the face of strong winds. Automated warnings about the aircraft's descent speed and terrain were also captured, suggesting that it may not have been configured properly for landing. As the investigation continues, the full transcript of the cockpit conversation will be released, which may provide additional clarity on the events leading up to this tragic crash.
