A $6.4 billion bitcoin options expiry will hit on Friday, potentially spiking market volatility. The CME Group will settle a recordโ€‘size options contract on bitcoin futures, the largest ever for a single expiry. The expiration is set for May 24, 2024, and the volume of contracts is expected to push prices sharply in the short term. Traders anticipate a rush to close positions before the settlement date.

Options give traders the right to buy or sell bitcoin at a set price. They are used for hedging and speculation. When a large option expires, many traders must either exercise or sell their contracts. This creates a surge in buying or selling pressure. Bitcoinโ€™s price has already been volatile, so a big options expiry can magnify swings in the market.

The contracts in play are on CMEโ€™s bitcoin futures, which track the underlying spot price. There are more than 1.6 million contracts in open interest, worth $6.4 billion at current prices.
