Evangelical leaders urge climate action in sermons

Faith-based climate messages shift conservative views by framing it as moral duty or national security threat. This matters because evangelicals, who historically oppose climate action, are now more โ€ฆ

A faith-driven approach to climate change can sway hearts and minds

Research shows that framing climate change through faith and national security can shift conservative views on the issue. A 2022 study by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication found that messages emphasizing moral responsibility and stewardship resonated with religious conservatives more than traditional environmental arguments.

This approach matters because conservatives, particularly evangelical Christians, have historically been skeptical of climate action. Polls by Pew Research show that only about a third of white evangelicals believe human activity is causing global warming. But framing climate change as a moral dutyโ€”like protecting Godโ€™s creationโ€”has shifted opinions in focus groups. The same Yale study tested messages that tied climate action to national security threats like resource conflicts and mass migration, which also swayed some conservatives.

The shift comes as religious leaders increasingly speak out. Pope Francisโ€™ 2015 encyclical *Laudato Siโ€™* called climate change a moral crisis, and evangelical groups like the Evangelical Environmental Network have pushed for action. In 2023, a group of Southern Baptist pastors endorsed climate policies for the first time, arguing that caring for the Earth aligns with their faith.

What happens next depends on whether these messages spread. Climate communicators are testing faith-based and security-focused approaches in conservative communities. If they work at scale, they could help bridge the partisan divide on climate change. But skeptics argue that moral or national security arguments alone wonโ€™t overcome deep-seated political resistance. The real test will be whether these messages lead to policy changesโ€”or just better talking points.
