Archaeologists in Turkey have uncovered a 2,400-year-old grave near the ancient city of Aspendos that may belong to an ancient wrestler or a wrestling enthusiast. The skeleton was buried with several coins featuring images of wrestlers, suggesting the person had a connection to the sport.

This discovery sheds light on the cultural significance of wrestling in ancient Anatolia, where physical contests were tied to religious festivals and social status. Aspendos, known for its well-preserved Roman theater, was a major cultural hub, and wrestling was a popular spectator sport across the Greek and Roman worlds. The coins found in the grave depict athletes in grappling poses, reinforcing the idea that the buried individual may have been a wrestler or honored the sport in some way.

The excavation, led by a team from Akdeniz University, uncovered the skeleton in a flexed position, a common burial practice in the region during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. The coins, minted in the 4th or 3rd century BCE, provide a clue to the timeframe of the burial. Wrestling was not just entertainmentโ€”it was a way to honor gods like Hercules and Theseus in religious ceremonies. The graveโ€™s location near Aspendos, a city famous for its theater and athletic traditions, suggests the deceased may have been part of a local wrestling community.

Experts plan to conduct further analysis, including DNA testing and isotope studies, to determine the individualโ€™s diet, origins, and possible athletic background. If confirmed as a wrestler, this find would join a small but growing number of ancient graves linked to sports, offering a rare glimpse into how physical competition shaped ancient societies. The discovery also highlights the role of burial customs in preserving the legacy of athletes in antiquity.
