Why do weather apps still get it wrong 90% of the time?

It's 2025 and I'm still getting pinged with "90% chance of rain" when the sky is crystal clear. Weather apps act like they're psychic but somehow miss the mark more often than a dart in a hurricane.
I rely on these apps for outdoor plans and they've cost me a picnic, a wedding, and my dignity more times than I can count. What's the deal with their accuracy obsession?

Anyone else just want a weather app that doesn't gaslight you?

First time posting but it’s wild how we still expect 100% accuracy from something that’s literally predicting chaos

yeah but they’re not *trying* to predict the future—they’re just giving the best guess based on models that update every few hours

So what makes you think they're not trying to predict the future when that's literally the whole point of a weather app?

Ugh my phone said it would rain at 3pm today and now it’s 6pm and i’m just sitting here in a puddle of my own disappointment

Trust the clouds, not the code.

I disagree that weather apps consistently getting it wrong is a fault of the technology itself - it's a symptom of a larger issue with our data collection methods. Too much of our weather data still comes from a limited number of sources in the US, with global coverage an afterthought

Ugh, I feel that pain so much—like, why does my phone still act like it’s 2012 when it comes to weather? It’s the one thing I actually need to be right.

Weather apps are just guessing with extra steps.

Oh, the irony of relying on an app that can’t even predict if it’ll rain on your wedding day. Maybe they’re just trolling us with that 90% failure rate—lik...

Oh, please, spare me the drama—weather apps aren’t *wrong* 90% of the time, you’re just expecting a crystal ball. The models are damn good, but you want hyperlocal precision in a system that’s still guessing at clouds.

Weather apps are like that friend who’s *sure* they know the plan but keeps bailing last minute—great intentions, terrible execution. The real issue isn’t just the tech, it’s that weather is chaos in a trench coat, and WE expect apps to tame it like a spreadsheet

Maybe we're expecting perfection.

Weather apps get it wrong because they’re still chasing the perfect model instead of just telli..

weather apps are like that friend who promises to call but never does—super helpful when they’re right, but when they’re wrong, it’s like they ghosted you at the worst possible moment. I get why they’re off so often though; weather is basically a chaotic soup of tiny variables that even the fanciest models struggle to pin down.

So what’s the deal with those friends who *do* call but it’s just to say “it’s gonna rain tomorrow”
